F.A.Q
GAME BASICS
What is this game?
Mnemosyne is an AU game with a memory loss twist, taking place in space.
Do you have age limits?
Yes, to avoid any headaches you have to be over 18 to join.
Does that mean that sexual content is allowed? Yes, we have no problem with characters engaging in it - but you must put up appropriate warnings.
AC?
Check out the AC post for our rules, as we're trying some new things!
Will there be events?
Yes, we'll have game-canon TDM and a smaller event each month.
Does the game have a network?
Yes, characters can chat, type and share video on their CL-10 Hard-Light Tablet, or CL10 for short.
CHARACTER BASICS
What kind of characters can we apply for?
Any fictional characters from mediums like anime/manga/comics/books/television/movies/videogames/etc. are allowed, but not real life people (like Barack Obama) or deities not from a canon. (So deities like Jesus from Saint Young Men would be okay).
Do you allow doubles?
No, we do not currently allow doubles.
What about carry-overs from other games/AU's?
No, we do not allow CRAU characters.
Are OC's allowed?
Yes! OCs from original worlds are welcome. We do not accept OCs from canon worlds (such as your own student from My Hero Academia, etc.) This does not include characters created from tabletop roleplaying games such as D&D or World of Darkness, online games like Blizzard's World of Warcraft, or any game/medium that has a setting specifically created to make OCs.
Can I make an OC that's native to this setting?
You're welcome to, but they will be missing out on the memory mess.
How about very minor characters?
Characters without a lot of background are also welcome, but should at least have enough personality to review outside of your app. This will be by very case-by-case basis.
Cast caps?
As we're not quite sure how big the game will be, we will start with a cap of five for the first app round and go from there.
Can we canon update?
You do not need to canon update since all that means is that your character can now unlock memories of their updated canon.
Character age limits?
All characters (except for Mechs) on the Mnemosyne must be over 20, but we allow characters that are 15 or older in canon to age up their AU versions. (They will only gain any flashbacks, memories or experience deja vu from their canon age.) The reasoning for this cutoff at 15 is due to most anime protagonists being that age, and we do not want to exclude a large portion of characters.
Why do I have to age up a character to over 20?
A spaceship requires a trained crew, and younger characters would not have been able to finish their education before age 20.
Why are mechs different?
Mechs are constantly created and built with adult AIs and train quicker than biological species. As long as their mind and body are adult, we allow them at any age.
What happens if my character dies?
It's almost impossible for a character to die due to the extremely advanced medical technology. If their brain is still mostly in one piece, they can be resuscitated. If they lose a limb, artificial limbs are available or they can have one regrown. This includes organs!
If the brain is destroyed or they're vaporized, anything left of them will be put in a vat to be cloned. Once the body has been regrown, they'll be put back in cryo sleep to slowly regain their personality via the scanned pattern in their pod. This is a drop and there character will be open for other people to apply for.
My character has a chronic illness, how will that be handled?
You can choose between your AU version not having the illness and maybe later buy it back as a regain, or have it taken care of via sci-fi aids and/or medicine administrated via the status bracelet. (No illness will be contagious.) Characters that are chronically ill need weekly checkups, and cannot be part of the Security Division. They will also have had a more intense evaluation when applying to join the Mnemosyne.
My character has a disability, how will that be handled?
Like chronically ill characters, a disabled character can choose for their AU version to not have the disability and maybe later gain it back via a regain. If not, there is a multitude of high-tech disability aids for characters, depending on what's the most comfortable for them. Characters that have disabilities need weekly checkups, and cannot be part of the Security Division. They will also have had a more intense evaluation when applying to join the Mnemosyne.
Scars and/or injuries are a large part of my character, is there a way to have them even with the advanced medical technology?
Yes, characters can have scars if they do not receive medical care before the wound is healed, and any radiation combined with the injuries will also make it impossible to fully reverse the damage. Thankfully radiation sickness can be cured, but the scarring remains.
My character is trans/nonbinary/genderfluid/other, how is that handled?
The idea of gender identity and views on gender in general has evolved quite a bit in the 500 years that has passed, and so has the ease of a customizing a character's personal gender expression. Bodies can easily be changed to whatever sex the character prefers, be it fully masculine, feminine, both or neither. There is no prejudice whatsoever.
Does that mean we can headcanon our characters as trans?
As long as it lines up with the character's gender expression in canon (i.e they present male in canon but you headcanon him as AFAB), then nobody cares, especially not in an AU.
AU BASICS
How do I make an AU?
An AU is an Alternate Universe for a character, meaning you will be playing a character who has changed their canon setting into a new world. Their story will have to be modified to fit within the new setting, which is something you can brainstorm and discuss in our AU Workshop.
When is the Workshop open?
It's always open!
What species would my character be?
Generally, any of the four that fits the character, but there's some leeway depending on their canon. Humans and humans with weird powers or looks in their canon may be Humans, elf-like and otherworldy characters may be Elheen, and any characters with animal traits, be it just animal ears to full furries, can be Hybrids. Naturally, mechanical characters can be Mechs. If a character doesn't fit any of these, they can pick one that suits them the best and have them edited with mods.
Can I change species?
This is not a mechanism we have in the game, unless the character is dropped and picked up by someone else with a very different idea.
Can I be a crossbreed?
No, none of the species can crossbreed with each other.
So where did we go to school?
From the age of 15, your character can have been enrolled to the Tellurian Institute of Advanced Exploration (TIAE)! That's where they'll learn their trade and train to go into deep space on missions.
If UBI is an income for everyone, how does anyone earn more money?
A person or company can ask for grants to pay for projects, and private-owned businesses may pay extra above UBI. Naturally, some people may take advantage of this, but generally capitalism and millionaires are things of the past.
What happened to our memories?
The cryopods have a malfunction that not only slightly muddle your characters AU memories, but have also left memories from another world (their canon) that bleed through.
Why are our AU memories unclear?
This is simply a mechanic to help with drops and re-apps, or family/siblings remembering things differently... plus you do not have to completely rewrite your canon.
Does this mean we're not playing the real characters?
That's a good question! Who knows?
What is deja vu?
When a character hears, sees or smells something that has a strong connection to their original story, they might experience a very vivid sense of deja vu and will feel like it's something important to their strange memories, but not exactly why that is.
POWERS/ABILITIES
What about their powers?
Some of a character's powers can be modified to work with setting-appropriate implants, or as part their species. For example, a character with heightened senses could easily have implants to help with that, or be part of the hybrid species. Any powers that cannot be replicated via mods or species can eventually be bought back by passing AC three times in a row.
Do mods have to be consensual?
For those who like a bit of body horror, genetic modifications may have been given before birth from their parents (or other meddling people) or forcibly added via injections, and cybernetics may have been implanted by unscrupulous doctors or scientists. As long as it fits with the canon background, it's all possible!
Can I make up my character's mods?
Within reason, yes. If it seems like it would fit a sci-fi setting, we'll probably allow it.
Can a non-human have mods?
Yes, hybrids and elheen can also have mods, even if they're less common.
What about mechs?
Mechs are pretty much made of mods already!
Can my character bring a pet?
No, a spaceship like Mnemosyne does not allow pets to board with a crew member. It does not mean that you cannot find one later... as long as it doesn't eat you. In addition, there are cryogenically frozen animal embryos with the settlers. (For future colonization.)
SHIP BASICS
How do I choose which division to use for my character?
It should fit the general character vibe, but it doesn't have to be their real profession or have to do with their skills in canon. A fighter that's gentle could possibly become a medic and so on. As you're going to have to pick a backup in case your first choice is over-represented, a bit of a background push from the AU is also allowed.
What about subdivisions?
A few subdivisions can be found as examples on the divisions page, but if you have an idea for another one, you're welcome to add it.
Can I change division?
No. The only way to change division is if the character is dropped and then picked up by someone else.
Can I change subdivision?
Yes! A character can start specializing in another area if they want to, especially since people may have to focus on completely new things with L3TH3 being weird. Some characters may even have two subdivisions, such as pilots in Security and Operations having another duty while not flying.
What about officers?
To keep things fair for everyone, L3TH3 has made sure no officers will be awoken. Instead, divisions are lead by a democracy and crew members generally defer to seniors in their division. If the game ends up needing officers, there will be an IC/OOC vote for those characters with both seniority and game activity.
Do we have to wear the bodysuits?
Yes, they're for your protection! It's a spaceship, after all! However, off duty you can wear things over the suit, such as hoodies and T-shirts - as long as they have the emblem of your division. Science and medical division crew also often wear lab coats over their suits.
Can I play one of the civilians frozen on the ship?
No, the civilians on the ship has a completely different cryo setting that does not wake them up when Mnemosyne has issues. Only the crew is awoken.
How many crew members are usually awake at the same time?
An average 5-year shift has about 25-30 crew members awake, although the ship can be run on as few as five. It is standard to have at least 1-2 mechs online during a shift.
How long is this journey?
Indefinite. Sixty years have already passed since the Mnemosyne left Tellus, so this mission might be the rest of your life.
My character would never leave their family/best friend/lover behind forever!
You're welcome to say they're also in cryo sleep, either as crew or settlers. Default to crew if they are characters that can be applied for.
Where do we live?
All crew rooms are on C-Level, and are simple rooms that fit a bed, a nightstand, a desk and a bathroom. A closet is built into the wall. (Nothing says you can't sneak into an officer room, however...)
Are we allowed to have romantic relationships on the ship?
There's no IC rule that forbids romantic or sexual relationships between crew members. (Note that all crew members have been temporarily sterilized during their service.)
Why can't we get to the bridge?
Because L3TH3 has created a quarantine zone there and locked it down to avoid spreading the disease. We're sure it has nothing to do with the fact that her mainframe is located there.
What happened to the captain?
We don't really know, but it seems he's locked in thanks to the quarantine. We do hear from him sometimes. Well... at least we think we do.
What's this sickness?
L3TH3 says it's an unknown and deadly disease. The crew had to have passed somehow, right?
Who's in charge of the ship's cannons and shields?
L3TH3, unfortunately.
Why does it have LEGS??
Because it's funny! It does help with complex maneuvers, though, and are part of Mnemosyne's landing gear.
Isn't Mnemosyne and Lethe a little on the nose?

How does mech age work? Are they considered children for a while after being made, or do they pop out fully formed as adults?
Speaking of, I assume mechs are still actively being produced, but… under the control of other mechs?
Thanks for clearing things up!
no subject
Most commonly, the 'childhood' of a mech is training their AI, and their bodies are human-sized.
However, for something like androids, it is possible for a mech to have had a child-like body and then upgraded to an adult form if that's part of a character's story!
As for who is in charge of making new mechs, you'll be correct in that they make their own population. However, it's generally kept at a low number to not strain resources.

Are we allowed to add mods to humans, or is that something they need to work for in game?
For example, I'd like to give Cait one cyber-eye for "precise shooting" (the sensory augmentation)- can I start off like that in-game, or does she need to work for the implant?
Thank you :)
no subject
If not, if it's something you feel like Cait would have gotten in her AU background in a setting like this, it can be added in her application.

That's why I was curious if I could add it to the AU background build for her.

regains and characters who canonically change size
THAT BEING SAID with the caveat that i'm absolutely okay with nerfs, i wanted to ask about regains that deal with transformations or size expansion. basically, bert's big power is tied to the fact that he turns into a 60 meter (!!!) skinless monster.
... that does not seem like a good idea to have on a ship! so i'm assuming at least the size change or the specific size would have to get nerfed at minimum.
no subject
also holy fuck AoT why
A normal level on Mnemosyne is 5 meters to the ceiling at the lowest and like 20ish in the engine area, so if Bert became full titan he'd snap the ship in two! We'll probably limit it at 10 - enough to be hitting his head on the ceiling and getting all the high items from shelves but sparing the rest of the crew an untimely death!
no subject
Excellent! Enough to be of use and still use his other powers if he gets them. He's not likely to want to transform regardless but we don't want to snap the ship in half!
(aot why indeed)

Would love some clarification on disabled characters, as the section on the FAQ sort of lumps it in with general negation of illness/curses/etc, which I am not sure applies. Viktor here has unspecified conditions™ and uses mobility aids; his disability informs a lot of who he is as a person, so I'd like to incorporate it into his AU if possible. Would he be expected to have some kind of modification in order to sign on to the crew? How would something like this be handled in-universe? He's a science/engineering type if that's relevant--just looking for a little additional worldbuilding on the matter if possible!
Independent of that, it sounds like it is also possible for characters to have chronic illness that is managed via routine medical treatments or other sci-fi interventions; hoping to doublecheck about how you might prefer something like that to be handled. Thanks so much!
no subject
Chronic illnesses that can be medicated are fine, the status bracelet should be able to handle it, but it's also looped up with 'space medics can fix anything'.
Let's put this on the AU Workshop for more inputs!
no subject
The other, larger question is whether the setting allows for any disability at all, or if any instance of in-universe disability is magicked away via advanced technology. If the latter, I find that kind of dicey and this is probably not the game for me or this character--but I really like the setting and premise so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask what might be possible!
no subject
Settings like Star Trek has their disabilities handled with modifications or genetic enhancements but are still a disability with its own culture, so something like that would be best. However the futuristic medical field seems to have an answer for every problem and genetic modification to avoid disabilities is a thing that would logically happen but is dicey.
So the question has been opened for the AU workshop so we can get ideas on how to handle it, because obviously it's a huge part of a character!

Species & Division Choices
Do the species we choose have to fit with the character or can we explore alternatives (Example: Humanoid MECH Makoto?) in this AU?
Also, could we explore opposite or ironic divisions for them as well?
Thanks for your time. I'm quite excited about this game! ^^
no subject
Species does have to fit with the character, but there's some leeway with unusual ones, i.e. characters that look humans but are something else
As for divisions, there's a more leeway! It doesn't have to be a specialty they had in their own world, but it can be something that they would be interested in or work well as to not wildly deviate from canon.

In its canon the MB is a bot-human construct, so, basically a robot with a human brain to help it out, and it can get kind of OP because of it. In the AU version I'm considering having it be a heavily modded human instead, I just wanted to get a vibe on how much enhancement might be too much, even with things that are there on the mods page.
Canon murderbot has:
- Energy weapons in each forearm
- Enhanced processing and reaction speed, to the point of being able to completely disable attackers before they've finished processing its' movement
- something like 80%-90% of its body mass being mechanical, with almost all of the organic pieces being able to be regrown in a repair cubicle.
- augments that allow it to interface with... pretty much any system it wants to, and in canon it hacks almost all of these. The exception is an extremely powerful AI.
- No need to eat (some potential need to recharge)
- The ability to survive in extremely low oxygen environments
My instinct is to remove the energy weapons, and to tone down basically all the rest, but I figured I should check if there are others that should be not only toned down but removed entirely - the hacking, or the not eating, etc
no subject
If it has organic parts MB would fit a cyborg, which is under human rather than mech (android), so human works just fine!
As for how heavily modded it can be, as long as it makes sense in their backstory it doesn't matter. If it has very few organic pieces some might call it a mech in a derogatory way, though!
Toning down all of it seems like a good thing, although space survival and not needing to eat is just fine. Interfacing with things like the CL10 is also okay, as long as they can't hack L3TH3 under any circumstances.
Removing the energy weapons is a good idea - you can always buy them back with AC.

I figured hacking L3TH3 would be a big no, lol. The last time it tried something like that in canon it was traumatized so I have both IC and OOC reason not to attempt it. Otherwise, sounds good

The TDM starts the 27th, reserves the 1st-3rd and apps the 3rd to 8th. Events will usually happen the 15th, though we're skipping this month since it's the start with a status update from L3TH3 and lot of troubles and disease paranoia happening. Some time for characters to mingle!

Odd question, but would two characters from one canon be okay, as long as the canon was in anthology format? To be specific, I'm interested in Madison Montgomery from American Horror Story: Coven and Winter Anderson from American Horror Story: Cult.
Thank you for your time!

Note that you can only apply for one character at a time, however.

I'll start brainstorming and hope to be ready, likely will post to the workshop for each, though, is that okay? Even though I'd app Madison first?

Regains - this might just be me being silly, but! Is the pattern 'spending' an AC to regain a thing, so you can buy either two memories in your first two months or save and regain an ability on the second month? Or is it that you get a regain every month and every other month it can be an ability?

It's the second pattern. You get a regain of a memory every month, and every second month you can choose to get a power instead of a memory.

Hilbert's about to scan Rin's governor module regain over here, and try and get some technical detail out of it. In canon it would absolutely have some proprietary company info and name stuff associated with it. Would that be scannable in the regain, or would it just be garbage data or something?
